1970 ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਿਛਲੇ 25 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਹਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੈਰੀਅਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ UNI ਨਾਲ ਉਪ ਸੰਪਾਦਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਅਦਾਰੇ ਨਾਲ , ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ 13 ਸਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, 2007 ਤੋਂ ਦੋ ਕੁ ਸਾਲ ਟ੍ਰਿਬਿਊਨ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸਤੋਂ ਅਗਲੇ ਦਸ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵੱਖ- ਵੱਖ ਅਹੁਦਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਟਾਈਮਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2018 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਓਥੋਂ ਅਸਤੀਫਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੇਸ਼ੇਵਰ ਅਤੇ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਖੜੋਤ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਉਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਟੀਮ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੋਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਹਨਤੀ ਯਤਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਖ ਧਾਰਾ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਮਿਲ ਰਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਹੱਕਦਾਰ ਸਨ।
ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਵਿਕਲਪਕ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਆਉਣ ਨੇ ਉਸਾਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣਾਤਮਕ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਲਈ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਜਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ, ਸੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਟਾਈਮਜ਼ ਵਾਲੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ । ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ (ਫ੍ਰੀਲਾਂਸਰ) ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦਿ ਵਾਇਰ, ਦਿ ਕੈਰਾਵੈਨ (ਮਾਸਿਕ ਮੈਗਜ਼ੀਨ ਅਤੇ ਔਨਲਾਈਨ) ਅਤੇ ਨਿਊਜ਼ਲਾਂਡਰੀ ਲਈ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਪੜਤਾਲੀਆ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਖਣਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਜੁਲਾਈ 2019 ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਰਾਵੈਨ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੁਝਾਅ ਹੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ 7,500 ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ 'ਹੈਡ ਇਨ ਦ ਸੈਂਡ' ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਲਿਆ।

ਕਾਫੀ ਨਿਜੀ ਜੋਖਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਮਾਈਨਿੰਗ ਬਾਰੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਖੋਜ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਅਧਾਰ 'ਤੇ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਲਈ ਸਾਲ 2020 ਦੇ ਜਗਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਨੰਦ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਲਈ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ।

Jagjit Singh Anand Memorial Award Winner-2020
Prabhjit Singh, born in Delhi in 1970, has been active in journalism for more than 25 years.
He started his career as a sub editor with the UNI and after working there for 13 years, first in Delhi and then in Chandigarh, joined The Tribune in 2007 for about two years, before shifting to Hindustan Times where he worked for the next ten years in various positions.
He resigned in April 2018 as he was feeling stagnated, both professionally and intellectually. By then he was feeling concerned about the growth of his young team of reporters as most of their laborious efforts didn’t find the space they deserved in the mainstream media.
The growth of alternative media by that time had kindled his hope in constructive and analytical journalism and he quit the HT job .
Since then he has been working as an independent journalist (freelancer) based in Delhi. He has reported for The Wire, The Caravan (both monthly magazine and online) and Newslaundry.
His very first big assignment came from The Caravan in July 2019 on illegal mining taking place in Punjab. It was his own proposal that finally took the shape of a 7,500-word reportage ‘Head in the Sand’ (https://caravanmagazine.in/reportage/punjab-government-looks-away-illegal-mining-unabated)
He was awarded the 2020 Jagjit Singh Anand memorial award for significant contribution to journalism on the basis of his investigative story on illegal mining, done at considerable personal risk.
