"2007 ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਚਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਜੇ ਨੇ 2013 ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਦਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਲਾਸ਼ 7-8 ਦਿਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਨਹਿਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮਿਲੀ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਚਲਦੀ ਰਹੀ। ਕਿਰਤ ਤੇ ਸਾਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਜਾ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਣਪੜ੍ਹ, ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰ ਤੇ ਮਿਹਨਤੀ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਰੂਪ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਧੂ ਖਰਚ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਚੇ, 1991 ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਤ ਤੇ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਆਰਥਕ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਉਸਰਿਆ ਢਾਂਚਾ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਗੌਰਵ ਦਾ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਇਸ ਦੁਰਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਸਨ। ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਵੇਰਵਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਡਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ, ਅੰਕੜੇ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕੀਤੇ। ਪਹਿਲਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਗਿਆਰਾਂ ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਜਾ ਸਕੀ।"

1960 ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮੇ ਬਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਮੌਰ ਕਹਾਣੀਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹਨ। ਕਿੱਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ, ਪਰ ਝੁਕਾਅ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਰਚੇਤਾ ਬਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਨੇ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਲੇਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕਈ ਫਿਲਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਟੀਵੀ ਸੀਰੀਅਲਾਂ ਲਈ ਪਟਕਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਕਾਲਮੇ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਦਬ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਚਾਰ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਪਾਏ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੇ ਸਾਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਿਹਤਰੀਨ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਚੁਣੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ: ਯੁੱਧ - ਖੇਤਰ (1999), ਖੰਡੇ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ (2000) ਅਤੇ ਡਬੋਲੀਆ (2018) ਵਿਚ।

"I had been thinking about this story since 2007. My brother-in-law committed suicide in 2013 and his body was found in a canal 7 or 8 days later. In those days of excruciating wait, his life constantly replayed inside me. My brother-in-law, who believed in labor and simplicity, was a typical representative of an illiterate, honest and hardworking farmer with little land holding. He never spent on anything extra. In my view, the conflict between the structure of the economic policies implemented and propagated since 1991 and the cultural pride of the Punjabi people were at the root of this tragedy. For details related to the story, I met Dabolias ( divers specialising in extracting the drowned bodies ) and collected statistics from them. The story finally got written eleven years after the first idea had formed in my head. "

Balwinder Garewal
Born in 1960, Balwinder Singh Garewal is currently one of the leading Punjabi writers in the short story genre.
A teacher by profession , but litterateur by inclination, Grewal has also written scripts and dialogues for various films and TV serials. He has so far published four anthologies of short stories. From time to time, his stories have been selected as the best story of the year: Yudh Khetar (1999), Khande di Dhar (2000) and Dabolia ( 2018).
